More important than Singing songs

Weather: Sun came back for a while but typhoon is coming now.

Story:

CCM is Contemporary Christian Music. It was a hot item in South Korea when I was 15 years old. Every church tried to make a gospel band to play new and hot songs. I played the electronic bass and became a president of youth fellowship of my church. In that time, I could have many chances to be popular if I can play some instruments or sing well. I was happy because many friends liked me and envied me. Most of church officer and attendants praised me so I thought that I am a nice Christian. Church activities were formed by music teams. If a music team could make activities, it would be thought nice. But, without a music band, none liked church activities.

Nowadays many Korean missionaries are going abroad and they’re sharing our methods in mission places. If they plant a church, there will be a music band because they experienced the same church culture in South Korea. I agree that young generations like music. But!

When does church music become a core part of worship service? Ancient churches also had church music but not too much. Western people made it as a core part of worship service. In the past, western people liked art so much because there was Renaissance. They composed many songs and thought their music is holy.  No, music is music. Even many church songs have a lot of misunderstanding of the bible. They thought that music has power but they didn’t compose them well based on the bible.

While we were crazy to sing songs in churches, we lost many things that we need to consider more than music. Only few people like reading the bible so they don’t know more important parts of the bible. All you are playing instruments and singing but none is helping weak people. What Jesus did in gospels?

I didn’t hate singing songs to praise the lord. I won’t deny music is very important among Christians. But Samuel replied: "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. (1 Samuel 15:22)
